solo show November 14 - December 18th, 2024 A KIND SOUL IS A COOL SOUL A KIND SOUL IS A COOL SOUL A KIND SOUL IS A COOL SOUL The collection is the visualization of the artist's theatrical universe, where her spirits come to play. Organically painted with the right and left hand in tandem, the surrealist work depicts compositions of natural magic and themes of reincarnated nostalgia. With the physical and emotional response from music, the artist is inspired by the colors of classical opera/operettas, harpsichord infused rock, and cinematic scores from Technicolor musicals to modern melodramas. The body of work is an expressionistic reflection of her past year exploring the supernatural elements of the self and dynamic definitions of home . The signature spiritual figures, The Cool People , are teachers on her journey to understand her soul, inviting viewers to show kindness to their own. opening reception Thursday, November 14th 6pm - 9pm detour gallery 545 west 23rd st, nyc GALLERY HOURS November 15th - December 18th 11am - 6pm Book Viewing Appointment hello@detourgallery.com ABOUT THE ARTIST ABOUT THE ARTIST ABOUT THE ARTIST Storm Ritter is a NYC-based fine artist and designer known for her past retail & gallery brick-and-mortar storefronts, Storm Ritter Studio , and distinctive brand of art, fashion, and interior design. - 60-Foot Building Mural: "Age Of The Cool People"
Press Feature in Tampa Bay Magazine, 2022. "Age of The Cool People" 60-Foot Building Mural Age of The Cool People is the 2022 commissioned surrealist mural by Storm Ritter on the east side of the Blur Nightclub building in Downtown Dunedin, Florida. The work is available to visit at 325 Main Street, including the signature mural and fine art featuring The Cool People inside the establishment. ABOUT A surrealist experience for the soul, the mural showcases The Earth, The Sun, The Star and The Moon. With tarot and astrological imagery, The Cool People perform a tale of creative fulfillment. Hidden within the large scale composition are multitudes of small details and whimisal stories. It's intended for the viewer to discover something new, bringing visitors back again and again. Since the creation in 2022, the mural is a visitor destination for local mural tours. TOUR GUIDE VIDEO Process Video, 2022. PROCESS VIDEO On a mechanical lift, Storm moved around the 60-foot wall with an organized inventory of paint canvas and brushes inside the booth. In twenty-one days, the mural was painted, from 8am to night. The artist archived the process in an online diary with photos and design content. Using only her refernece painting as a template, the mural was painted freehand using a memorized template. READ THE ARTIST PROCESS ORIGINAL DESIGN The original design was painted on three wood panels, with the last acting as the final design. The plaque sat on an easel at the bottom of the building for consistent reference. Without stencils or projections, Storm mimicked the original design with opportunity to evolve in each section. Once the anchor elements were placed, the worlds were able to expand with the creativity of the moment. The wood panel painting aligns with the complete mural. After the completion, two of the original wood paintings were sold to collectors and one gifted to the owners of the building. SHOP THE PRINT Process Photos, 2022. PHOTO ARCHIVE Magical elements of Age Of The Cool People are found in the process and small moments. Photographer Lisa Sampietro filmed and shot process shots of the artist during the weeks in production. At the completion of the mural, the artist and photographer shot detail images. Hundreds of The Cool People are embedded within the composition. Storm's attention to detail and vintage shading techniques are reminiscent of an old world storybook, emphasized with an added gold trim around the building. In the archive photos below, view the mural in depth with close-up and focused images.

- About "The Cool People"
THE COOL PEOPLE THE COOL PEOPLE THE COOL PEOPLE In 2014, Storm's signature figures came to fruition, and clients voiced them as "cool." As they evolved into a motif, their name was undeniable: The Cool People . Spirits around you, people in your head, or souls within you; they are whatever you want them to be. Each person is completely unique; never one like the other. As an ambidextrous painter, using the right hand for structure, and left hand for emotion, The Cool People are birthed. The figures often have emptiness within their bodies, representing unfulfilled qualities all humans share. The head lines are essential to their being, symbolizing divinity and reminiscent of chapeaus. Each one is unique, just like people are. Watch the origin video of The Cool People to see the organic nature of their creation. Classic black-and-white paintings of The Cool People on artisan paper and canvas are the artist's most popular custom order. Once framed, the works are an elegant addition to home decor. As developed main characters in the surrealist stories, the compositions are orchestrated by their soulful presence. As expressionistic storytellers, they stylistically evolve in detailed landscapes. The figures inherently embody strong feminine energy, but for the artist, The Cool People represent all people. Variations on The Cool People appear in Storm's work with the mimicking of foliage and mermaids to morphing into musical instruments and esoteric symbols. Whether they are dressed in lavish garb or as simple silhouettes, The Cool People are the lead actors in the productions.
