PAINTED FASHION
Storm Ritter Studio
As a full time painter, Storm began selling her painted work clothes at Storm Ritter Studio in 2015. With the customer popular interest, she focused on showcasing painted original garment pieces, vintage apparel and sourced deadstock to compliment her textile collection. Garments of all kinds were accessible to be transformed into wearable artwork, catering to street wear and stagewear custom orders for clients. Painted t-shirts with the early years of The Cool People were featured as well as immensely colorful pattern work. Not only were the pieces painted by Storm, but included patchwork of original textiles and embellishments.
Wearable Art
Using the various forms of paints to apply to textile, garments visually embodied a technicolor palette or classic black-and-white look. The concept of an "Artist Outfit" was promoted, selling bulk expressionistic painted apparel. Weekly, new apparel would be added to the floor, reflecting the theme of the current inventory.
With the sales staff, organization and promotion enabled the artist to create every pieces, ensuring credibility for customers. Interns assisted in distressing t-shirts while learning production techniques. Storm and her seamstress, Jenny Lin, worked as a team re-designing vintage for painting and manufacturing the original textile collections.
Process Samples
Storm created painted pieces in the upstairs production studio and during live painting events downstairs in the main retail shop. Video content was typically filmed during the production, showcasing her process painting clothing on her body or ambidextrously in studio. The artist often painted directly on models wearing the garments, adding a performative aspect to the production. She always wore her own apparel and painted fashion, expanding her day-to-day marketing around Downtown Manhattan. Painted fashion is still a pillar in collections, available for custom orders online.
